China industry spotlight: Business Development

Growing and developing a company is essential for long-term sustainability. Working as a business development manager means you are responsible for keeping the company running for the long haul. Your main focus areas will be strategy, marketing and sales. You will be constantly looking for new opportunities to grow the business whether that means finding new clients or better serving existing clients. The best way to find new opportunities is to make sure you stay on top of the latest developments in your industry, and constantly make new connections.

If you are able to find a business development job in China, where making connections is essential to any type of job, you’ll soon have stacks and stacks of business cards as you surround yourself with billions of potential clients, business partners and co-workers. In order to see if any of those new contacts will be valuable for the company, you’ll keep spreadsheets for each contact and crunch the numbers to ensure the cost outlay is worth the potential returns.

Business development is a bit like being an in-house consulting. Your decisions will impact, change or push forward the company’s strategy. You’ll be able to see before anyone if the company’s strategy is effective or not. Being at the forefront of any company makes business development an extremely exciting and fast-paced industry to work in.

China is the perfect place for this industry as the Middle Kingdom is constantly changing and growing. Plus, more and more Chinese companies are looking into expanding their strategy and scope from national to global.
